Rocketman: Dinner and a Movie
Artist Statement
To inspire my project, I watched the movie Rocketman about Elton John. It has one of the strongest color palettes of my favorite movies, so that is the reason I chose it. I focused on the color palette when choosing the artwork, but I ended up settling on the idea of "over the top" as a commentary on the lifestyle of the rich and famous. I included vanilla extract in order to emphasize the intoxicating elements associated with the lifestyle of the rich and famous. The line elements I chose help to create a sense of movement and energy. Since the tilt of the background division is slightly off in addition to the tilt of the pillow, they indicate a type of moral descent. The colors of the cups are also supposed to be primary colors to go along with the color scheme of the inspiring movie and to show how these colors are the foundation of so much. The film and movie industries inspire so much of modern culture that it is important to note that in a way, these are building blocks the same way the primary colors are building blocks for color creation in color theory. The gold leaf used in the background is fake and helps to contribute to the artificial gratification that is associated with the over-the-top lifestyle and lifestyle choices. I created this work in part due to the interesting color palette, but also because I have been listening to the song Goodbye Yellow Brick Road on repeat for the last few days. If anything talks about the toxicity of the life of the rich and famous, that song does. It talks about the necessity to go back to roots and nature. Energy and motive are necessary to make this work successful, so that is what I tried to incorporate.
