These are the 5 naturally occurring objects that I collected from my backyard for inspiration.
The stick, weed, and rock would end up informing my choices more than the other two objects but choosing to use them all still helped with my overall understanding of how to create Nature Sculptures. |

The odd bark piece in the center was especially inspiring, so I am glad that we shared other people's research for inspiration.

When I created my "Mother and Child", I thought about a bee-hive and made a honey-comb inspired interior. Naturally, I didn't plan any of this out. I got to make it and had to tweak things as I went along because much of it wasn't planned. In fact, the interior was created separately. It just worked so nicely inside of the mother that I left it inside of her. |

A void was a tricky one. I started with the tail-like element and at first, was unsure about how I was going to add on. After thinking about the Principals of Art, I ended up deciding that it needed a significantly less-textured element to counteract the tail. I made the body out of wire and tape before painting over it. Initially, it was just white, but I wanted to push the inside a bit more. I used black paint to blend with the white paint. It turned out looking like some kind of void with a hat- since my "tail" was in a loop at the moment. After a suggestion from the teacher, the loop became a tail.

When I was creating my sculptures, I continually referred to the photos and pictures, but, most often, I would go out in nature and gain inspiration from there.
As for "Inside," I thought about a rock initially. I really only knew that I wanted to have negative space inside of it. So, when I got to work with the tape, I ended up leaving two hols. One hole was continually covered and laced through while the other had the net-like part cut off. Much of the string along the outside was sewn through the tape.
"Creature" was one of my last projects alongside "Lined Rock". "Creature" has a large oval-circle skin. I decided to play with transparency after looking at one of my classmate's work. I was impressed by the detailed transparency added, so I decided to do that "Creature" I made a wire outline before lacing it with string and wire. Once I covered it in transparent tape, I added the vine-inspired inside element.
At this point, I still had to add some more white paint to "Weirdo." Adding white paint gave him more dimension and character. I had worked so hard with texture- even spray-painting the gel-medium-tracing- paper mixture with the only black I had. The original plan was to spray-paint it white, but I think it turned out better this way. The white almost looks like highlights.
"Lined Rock" was the most difficult sculpture I did and one of the last ones. I created a fairly successful sculpture out of wire and tape before deciding to cover it in strips of black masking tape. Because it didn't have quite enough character, I added the white paint in strips and lines to emphasize how I used space.

Artist Statement
My Nature Sculpture projects were made out of a variety of materials including wire, masking tape, tracing paper, gel medium, black and white paint, and yarn. This project was made without thinking about anything except for the materials. Not how to plan it or how it needs to be finalized. All of these sculptures were crafted on instinct alone. For most of the projects, I started with the wireframing because I found it fun and inviting the way the wire moved when I bent it with pliers. From there, the next step differed from tape to gel-medium and tracing paper, but they all came out incredibly different. While a few of the sculptures were denser- such as "Weirdo," "Inside," and"Lined Rock." "Mother and Child," "Void," and "Creature" were longer and more open forms. This really helped promote the connection between objects and the way they were linked by internal desires and knowledge of space.
